The 2 Ednas and Age UK
Edna Gamson and Edna Ryan are both in their 90’s and have been going to Age UK Calderdale and Kirklees day care for almost 20 years between them.
They are big fans.
It allows them simply to get out of the house and socialise with people their own age in a safe and welcoming environment.
Edna G was born and bred in Leeds but moved to Huddersfield after her husband died to be near her daughter. This meant leaving all of her neighbours and social networks behind. She is in good health but suffers with arthritis in her knees which slows her down and cataracts are making reading increasingly difficult.
When her daughter suggested going to day care, Edna resisted as she thought that it was just for old people. ‘You never think of yourself as old’ she laughed. But her daughter encouraged her so she decided to give it a try and has never looked back!
She thoroughly enjoys her day at Sundale House and has tried all sorts of new activities but most of all she enjoys the new friends she has made, the delicious meal they get in the middle of the day and the staff, ‘who are all absolutely lovely’.
Edna R is from Huddersfield and doctors recommended that she start coming to day care after a spell in hospital suffering from anxiety. She now comes 3 times a week and ‘loves every minute’.
She lives in a flat by herself and her memory is not what it used to be but she has a daughter living close by who looks after her. Edna is also bubbly and sociable but at 93, she is just a little bit fragile.
She enjoys the games and quizzes they do at Sundale House as they keep her mind active and she too has tried lots of different activities but agrees with the other Edna that the best thing about coming is the chance for a chat and a giggle over a cuppa. Otherwise she would be stuck indoors with only the telly for company.
Both agreed that coming to Sundale House has really made a difference to their lives and it is something to look forward to each week.
